Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique that harnesses your body’s self-healing capabilities and natural bodily function through stimulating specific points. Acupuncture promotes the flow of energy along meridians throughout the body, releasing “Qi” and balancing both yin and yang. When all these forces are balanced, the body is healthy. However, when these channels are blocked and out of balance; pain, lack of function or illness may occur. Through stimulating the body’s various systems, Acupuncture can restore proper function and act as a form of preventative medicine for a healthier, happier future.

A psychotherapist is a trained mental health professional who specializes in providing therapeutic support and treatment for individuals experiencing psychological and emotional difficulties. They work closely with clients to help them understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and to develop healthier coping mechanisms and strategies for managing their challenges.

Psychotherapists employ various therapeutic approaches and techniques based on their training, experience, and the needs of their clients. They create a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients can openly express their concerns and explore their inner world. By establishing a strong therapeutic alliance, psychotherapists foster trust and encourage clients to delve into their experiences, beliefs, and past traumas.

One of the key roles of a psychotherapist is to listen actively and attentively to their clients. They seek to understand their clients' perspectives and gain insights into their thought patterns and emotional responses. Through this empathetic understanding, psychotherapists help clients gain clarity about their challenges and develop alternative perspectives and solutions.

Psychotherapists use evidence-based interventions and treatment modalities to address a wide range of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, relationship problems, and more. They may utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, humanistic therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, or other specialized therapies depending on the client's needs and the therapist's expertise.

In addition to conducting individual therapy sessions, psychotherapists may also facilitate group therapy, family therapy, or couples therapy. They may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as psychiatrists or social workers, to ensure comprehensive and integrated care for their clients.

Overall, a psychotherapist is a compassionate professional who supports individuals in their journey toward emotional healing, personal growth, and improved mental well-being. By providing guidance, validation, and evidence-based interventions, they empower their clients to make positive changes, enhance their self-awareness, and lead more fulfilling lives.

Registered Acupuncturist and Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Carmina graduated from the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM), successfully completing their 4 year TCMP Diploma program with honours. She is a registered member of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario and is practised in the areas of acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and Tui Na massage. Carmina has also traveled to Denver, CO to study under Dr. Martha Lucas, where she earned the certification to use Dr. Lucas’ patented Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture system to treat patients for facial/neck rejuvenation and weight management.

Carmina is an educator and an advocate of continuing education and lifelong learning. She’s a faculty member of her alma mater TSTCM where she teaches TCM theory classes and tutors TCM students preparing for their licensing exams. In clinic, Carmina teaches her patients how to use TCM for self care at home, providing them with tools like TCM diet and Qi gong to help prolong the effects of her treatments.

As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Carmina’s approach to healing begins with caring and compassion, and respecting that each patient is unique. She follows the basic premise of TCM practice: “Treat the patient, not the disease” – meaning she treats the patient as a whole, restoring balance within the body, strengthening the person’s Qi (vital energy), thereby allowing the body to fight the disease naturally. Carmina has successfully treated patients with digestive disorders, gynecological disorders, stress related disorders, pains/aches, allergies, insomnia and as a former intern at the Dorothy Lea Hospice has experience in bereavement support and palliative care.
